Waikato’s Don Jessen is forging a successful new career as a writer after attending one of our Hamilton workshops on How to Get Published.
A former caravan manufacturer, Jessen came to the workshop in August 2012, saying he wanted to learn whether he could learn how to convert his desire to write into becoming a published author.
Following the workshop, Hurricane Press introduced him to contacts at David Bateman Ltd, with a recommendation that they look to consider publishing two books Jessen planned about caravans.
‘While we liked the idea of the books ourselves, we felt Bateman would do an excellent job because they have a guy (Bill Honeybone) who specialises in the Kiwi-bloke-outdoors type of book,’ Hurricane Press’ managing director Josh Easby said.
Bill Honeybone loved the concepts and in 2014, Retro Caravans: Vantastic Kiwi Collections became a Top 10 Non-fiction List bestseller, and in 2015 A Great Indoors for the Great Outdoors: The Liteweight Caravan Story, was also published by Bateman. Since then, Jessen’s third book, Retro and Vintage Boats, has also launched.
‘It just started as a hobby. I never expected things to go this way. I started only intending to do a history of Liteweight Caravans and one thing led to another,’ Jessen told the Waikato Times.
